Retro hair is all about the wave, height and volume! To achieve voluminous waves, have your hair wet set in rollers and allow them to dry completely. When dry remove rollers and tease, or backcomb, each section of hair. Don’t forget to use some hair spray to set the style in place. Another retro ‘do is pin curls. Buying your prom dress online? STOP, what would make a young prom dress shopper cry when seeing her online purchase of a Jovani prom dress style#201006? When this dress is a stunning corset prom dress with black and silver beading and a black satin skirt. In this case the dress the young shopper thought she was getting from the online website turned out to be different from the one she saw in the bridal shop. Read her story in her own words in a letter we received from Erin:

Hi, my name is Erin. This year,2010, I needed a prom dress for my 2010 Junior prom. I got my last year's prom dress from Party Dress Express and knew I would find a dress there. I went with my friends and found the perfect most amazing dress. I fell in love with it right away. I went home that night and showed my mom pictures online and decided I would try and find it cheaper amount somewhere online. BIG MISTAKE. I found the same dress I wanted for $295.00 at Top Bridal Store online. They had it in my size and color, so I ordered it. I was so excited to get my dress in the mail and finally a month later I did ....or so I thought.

I opened the box with the dress and was devastated. It was the worst dress I have ever seen. THEY SENT ME THE WRONG DRESS! It was black on black with tiny ugly silver beads and the dress I ordered was a black and silver and not black on black.It was poorly made and looked as if it had already been worn! I called the place and no answer. I emailed them and finally they answered and said they would only refund me half of what I gave them.... I was out of a lot of money. I cried every time I thought of it and didn't even want to go to prom anymore.

I decided to go back to the Bridal Shop and find a cheap dress that I could wear to prom since I didn't have much money now to buy a dress with. I tried on a tom of dresses and just got sadder by each dress that didn't fit just right, I could only think of my DREAM dress. I needed a break. I started crying I was so stressed out and finally the owner of the bridal shop came over to me and asked what was wrong, I told her my story and she wanted to help me. She said she would call Jovani and see what she could do. I didn't know what to do . I was so happy and ecstatic! I couldn't believe it. She was entirely nice and caring. She saved my whole problem, she SAVED my prom.

So, the moral of the story, BECAREFUL, don't try and find a better deal out there online. There are so many scams out there and in the end... you get caught in a bad situation. I was out almost $350.00 and no dress to wear to prom. I almost didn't even go to prom! I wish I had just bought the prom dress in the bridal store in the first place; I would have saved myself a loss of so much money and would have had the perfect dress from the start.

I don't know what I would have done without you. THANK YOU so much for everything you did for me, it means more than you know. I am so ecstatic for prom now.I have the perfect dress, my dream dress, all because of you.

Guide for Guests of the Wedding: What to Wear

Wedding attire can be a complicated matter, and not just for the wedding party. If you've been invited to a wedding, you may be feeling a bit intimidated about making the right fashion choice -- especially if the invitation indicates the "dress" for the wedding. Don't be nervous. This stuff is actually quite simple, and the bottom line is, everyone's going to be watching what the bride, groom and wedding party are wearing, not you.

Here are some basic guidelines to help you be a well-dressed guest. Keep in mind that different regions of the country have slightly different dressing conventions, so if you're attending a wedding out of your area, you might want to double check with a local to see if you're attire selection is on target. If no dress is indicated, your attire is determined to a large degree by the time of day.

Morning Wedding

Think "special clothes". Depending on the season, your attire is likely to be lighter colored and a bit more casual that you might wear for an evening wedding. Men should still plan to wear a suit or nice sports coat and slacks, and a tie. Women can wear a nice dress, skirt or suit, and might opt for something comparatively colorful, or floral.

Afternoon Wedding

Dress essentially as you would for a Morning Wedding.

Evening Wedding/No Dress Indicated

Dress as you would for a nice dinner out. Men should wear suits, women should choose dresses, skirts or elegant suits. Select darker, more sophisticated colors and fabrics than you would choose for a morning or afternoon wedding. Jewelry can be more elaborate, and women would probably choose to carry a small evening bag rather than a purse.

Casual Attire

Although it would be rare to see this indicated on an invitation, it is sometimes used when the hosts wish to let you know that the circumstances of the wedding are such that you really should not be too dressed up. Leave the high heels or a double-breasted suit at home. This might be the case if the wedding is being held outdoors -- at the beach, in a park, etc. -- and is more common for second weddings. Other variations on this level of dress might be expressed as "Garden Party Attire", etc. However, don't take casual to the extreme. Women might still opt for a dress or skirt, although a more casual one or a suit with flats. Gentlemen might wear nice slacks and a dress shirt with or without a tie. Casual attire does not mean jeans and tennis shoes.

Cocktail Attire

Dress as you would for a fancy cocktail party or a fancy dinner out on the town. This attire is similar to that indicated above for Evening Weddings, but with an emphasis on sophistication. Women should strive for elegance and chic, rather than sweet or pretty dresses. Men should dress to be their most dashing (although tuxedos are not appropriate).

Black Tie Optional

This dress allows those who wish to go all out and dress in black tie to do so, but provides leeway for those who wish to dress a little less formally. This option is generally well received because it means that men who don't own or want to rent a tuxedo need not feel compelled to do so. Men can opt to wear a dark suit instead of a tuxedo, but a black, dark navy, or dark Grey suit would be the best choice. Men should dress as formally as they can, short of actually wearing a tuxedo. Women can dress as formally as black tie, but can also get away with a shorter, cocktail style dress.

Black Tie

This is the most formal attire. Men should plan to wear a tuxedo, and women dress in formal dresses, usually floor length. If you are in doubt as to how fancy to dress, ask a few friends who are also attending the wedding what they plan to wear to help direct your choice. When in doubt, err in the direction of over dressing a little (with the exception of wearing a tuxedo to anything but a black tie or black tie optional event) rather than showing up dressed too casually.

Other attire essentials:

Wearing black: The long-standing tradition of ladies not wearing black to a wedding has been overturned. Today, even the bridesmaids might be outfitted in black. Just make sure you don't look like you're attending a funeral. Consider accessorizing that little black dress with a brightly colored scarf or blazer.

Wearing white: Since the popularization of the white wedding dress in the mid-19th century, women have avoided wearing white to a wedding, so that the bride might uniquely shine in her white wedding gown. While this rule, like the "no black dresses" rule, has since been rejected, a female guest should select carefully if she opts to wear white. Be careful to not select anything that might cause anyone to mistake you for the bride. Since current bridal fashions are sleeker than ever, and many older and second time brides dress in wedding suits, you might embarrass yourself (and the bride) in a white outfit. If you plan to wear white, choose carefully, and accessorize with color.

Put It In Writing
Jotting down a last-minute to-do list not only helps you get organized but also keeps panic in its place, says Dr. Dale Atkins, a New York City–based psychologist. “When you see your errands written down in black and white, they become less overwhelming and more manageable.” Keep your list handy and check things off as you go along. “That way,” she says, “you don’t have to stress out about remembering everything—it’s all right there.” Sounds like she’s got the “write” idea!

Plan a Snack Attack
If the ticking clock is making you nervous, you can munch your way to a much happier state, says nutritionist Hillary Baron, co-owner of Mind Over Matter, a nutrition and personal-training firm in New York City. In addition to eating three square meals, she suggests you snack on carbohydrate-rich foods. Eating carbs releases serotonin, a feel-good brain chemical. So to help stay calm, try chewing on these mood foods: a few graham crackers with peanut butter or some fresh fruit.

Shake It, Baby!
Exercise is the perfect preprom activity, according to Karina Krepp, a certified personal trainer in New York City. “Raising your heart rate can help dissipate those preprom jitters and give you the added benefit of a healthy glow.” And you don’t need a formal workout either. “Just putting on your favorite music and practicing your dance moves is sure to squash your stress,” Krepp says.

Hydrate—Don’t Caffeinate
To keep your body—and mood—in top shape, whet your whistle. “Every cell in our body contains water,” Baron says, “and every body function requires water to work.” Which means not getting enough of the cool clear stuff could leave your party plans high and dry: “Dehydration can lead to fatigue and can increase stress,” Baron says. If you think chugging Coke or other caffeinated drinks will set your liquid levels back on track, get ready for a splash of reality. “Caffeine can cause a decrease in blood sugar,” Baron says. “This can intensify those fretful feelings.” Instead, down eight to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water over the course of the day to make sure you hit optimum hydration.

Scenario: You've goofed up with your deep purple nail color, and discover you've run out of polish remover.

In a pinch, clear polish or topcoat can substitute for remover. Brush a layer of the clear stuff over your nail, then quickly rub it off with a tissue. The offending color will come off too (though it may take a few swipes if the color's really intense). Or you can try layering a new color (close in shade to the old one) on top of the first color.

Scenario: When you started to blow-dry, your hair got all tangled up in your round brush.

It's the grown-up equivalent of getting gum stuck in your hair, but luckily, it's easier to get the brush out. Spritz a detangler or leave-in conditioner onto the tangle. Then take a deep breath, and begin to lift your hair up and away from the bristles. Use the pointed end of a rat-tail comb to grab small sections of hair as you go. With patience and a steady hand, you'll be able to unwrap the snarl without having to resort to scissors. If you're in a sweat, it may help to have someone else do this for you.

Scenario: You wanted to add a touch of sparkle to your cheekbones and ended up with glitter all over your face.

Makeup artist Wei Lang says to use an ever-so-slightly moist cotton ball to blot away as much of the glitter as possible, then go back over your skin with a damp cotton swab to lift off any stray specks. Be patient--this can be a time-consuming process. Ready to try again? Okay, this time use a brush or sponge dipped in just the tiniest amount of glitter, and work slowly and carefully.

Scenario: Your polish is chipped, but you have no time to redo your entire manicure.

There's no need to panic, says New York nail genius Jin Soon Choi. Instead of starting from scratch, simply put fresh polish on the chipped parts only, then wait for about two minutes. When you're sure the polish is dry, apply a second layer of color to the entire nail. Brush on some quick-dry topcoat, and you're done. Your nails won't be 100-percent salon-perfect, but who's looking that closely anyway?

Scenario: You bleached your hair platinum, then decided to go back to natural. For some bizarre reason it's now greenish-brown.

Color gone wrong can happen with do-it-yourself extreme shade changes. That's one reason all the big-time hair color companies have set up 800 helplines. Clairol's Sandra St. Roi says that a shade with some red in it will help neutralize those scary green tones. Note: If your hair is truly green (or orange or fill in the blank), don't even try to undo the damage yourself--it's time to get some professional color correction at the salon.

Scenario: Your mascara made my lashes clumpy.

Take a cotton swab, dip it in makeup remover, then squeeze out the excess. Carefully go over your lashes, using the swab to sweep up the excess goo. You might want to hold a folded-up tissue under your lower lashes as you work to catch any loose mascara bits. Comb out your lashes while they're still wet, then use a tissue to blot them dry. Now you're perfect.

Scenario: You put some shine-enhancing lotion in my hair, and ended up with a bad case of the greasies.

If you don't have time to shampoo and start fresh, reach for some baby powder or dry oatmeal. Either of these will sop up excess greasiness. Rub the stuff into your hair, especially at the roots, then brush vigorously until it disappears (it will, we promise). If the top of your hair is in need of volume, use a light spritz of hairspray at the roots, then follow with hot rollers, a curling iron or a blast from the blow-dryer.

Scenario: You've been putting in late homework nights, and have the dark circles to prove it.

Concealer is your friend--but the secret is not to go overboard with application. A little coverup cream goes a long way, so start by applying concealer only in the inner corners, where the deepest darkest shadows lurk. Tap the concealer in gently with your finger or a brush, then examine your work in the mirror. Lightening up the inner corners is often all it takes for a wide-awake look. If not, apply concealer to more of the dark areas, little by little. Finish with a layer of translucent powder.

Scenario: You woke up this morning with a big, red, shiny pimple, and prom is tonight.

First, resist the urge to treat your blemish with any kind of zit lotion until the day after prom. You need to create a smooth surface for concealer, and pimple cream will leave your skin all flaky. When you're ready to go undercover, follow these steps: Apply oil-free moisturizer to your face (pimple included) and let it sink in. With a brush or very clean finger, dab concealer onto the zit. Pat lightly to blend around the edges, using as light a touch as possible so you don't end up dabbing away all the concealer. Now brush on the teensiest amount of translucent powder to set the makeup. Look--no more pimple!

Scenario: You went on a brow-tweezing rampage and now you've got a bald spot.

It's scary how easy it is to overtweeze your brows. Don't worry, they'll grow back in a few weeks. But for right now, Avon Salon & Spa's resident brow mistress Eliza Petrescu can help you fill in the blanks. Start by brushing eyebrows straight up with a brow brush or even a toothbrush. Using a soft brow pencil, make tiny hairlike strokes between your brow hairs wherever they look a bit sparse. (Eliza says pencils are way easier to control than brow powders, which can be messy and difficult to use.) Now rebrush your brows to blend everything together for a totally natural look. How simple was that?
